I was recently asked to look at SEO (search engine optimisation) by a client I did work for sometime back. He thought it was just a quick look at souce and a quick fixing up the meta tags and descriptions on his website. I gave him a list of questions I needed answered and haven’t heard back.Too hard, I suppose.SEO is an integral part of having a website. It’s not something one considers doing after the site’s been up for a few months. When we design and set up a website for our clients, we always include basic SEO
as part of the original design and coding. Why? Well, simply put, it’s a first step for further work.I must admit, that when I push for further SEO work, many times, this is put in the too hard basket. It doesn’t really make sense, as we do pretty much all the work involved. But, like any job we do for our clients, we need some sort of direction (read, a brief) from the client, before we proceed.Going back to meta tags and descriptions, allow me to put up a few points.First of all, the site must have these. But, these are not the principal tools for SEO that they were 10-15 years ago. In those, if I may wax a bit lyrically, halcyon days, this was the main tool/strategy. And, since there were very few sites up, indexing of websites and making it to the first page of Google was pretty easy.Mind you, use of tags, titles and the like are part of the effort, as well as, link building, appropriate use of keywords in the content and so on.Let’s face it, SEO is hard yakka. It involves a lot of work, especially off-page, which the client may not only be unaware of, but also something he/she may not appreciate. For instance, social media
is now part and parcel of the internet, our SEO strategies include utilising this to the full. Referral sites are very important in helping sites move up in the search pages and we use these as well. So, it goes.Don’t let me frighten you, but if you are considering improving your search engine rankings, we will do pretty much all the work for you.We need some input and we get the job going.Til my next post.
